The Copper King
Mansion is a 34-room Victorian mansion built in the 1880s as
the Butte residence of William Andrews Clark on what was then
the western edge of one of the West's wildest undergound mining
districts.
Today, it is located in the center of the nation's largest National
Historic Landmark District designated in 2002 by the National
Trust for Historic Preservation as one of a dozen of
the most distinctive destinations in the country.
We are on the National Register of Historic Places but we are
one of many historical attractions in the area. Some of the nation's
first tall commercial buildings built by millionaires like W.A.
Clark abound a short walk from our door. The landscape is dotted
with mineyards and the tell-tale headframes that indicate where
men once toiled underground to bring up the precious metals from
the underground copper mines, several owned by W.A. Clark.
In what is becoming known as Montana's Festival City, we are
located close by major summer festivals such as the fireworks
and parade for the 4th of July, The
National Folk Festival (2008-2010), Evel
Knievel Days and the Montana
Irish Festival in August.
Excellent dining
and shopping
opportunities abound within a few blocks of the Mansion. The
Copper King is only a few blocks from the traditional business
district of Uptown Butte. The same district is now a lively entertainment
zone with nearly 25 restaurants that serve a wide range of cuisine
there and several nightspots that offer live music and other
entertainment. Some of these Uptown restaurants have received
regional acclaim for their menus, among these the Uptown
Cafe, the Acoma, The Metals Bar & Grill, and Fred's
Mesquite Grill to name only a few.
Within a short walk of the Copper King are the Charles
W. Clark Mansion, and the
Mother Lode Theatre.
The Copper King Mansion is only a short drive from other local
attractions such as the World
Museum of Mining, the Mineral Museum, Our
Lady of the Rockies, the Berkeley Pit, the Granite Mountain
Memorial, the Mai Wah Museum
and guided walking tours provided by the guides of Old
Butte Historical Adventures.
Trolley tours are provided at the Chamber
of Commerce Visitor Center. If you are in town on business,
the Copper King is located close to the headquarters of major
local businesses such as Northwestern Energy, CCCS, Inc., Synesis7,
Resodyn Corporation, and MSE/MERDI. A half a block east is the
Butte-Silver Bow County Courthouse and only a couple of blocks
beyond that is the Mike Mansfield Federal Courthouse. The Butte
School District administrative offices and nearby Montana Tech
campus are all just a short distance from our door as well.
